Introducing Recordings from Lyssna
Unlock a deeper understanding of your users by capturing their audio, screen, and camera during unmoderated tests.
We're excited to announce the launch of our latest feature, Recordings. With Recordings, you can capture your participants' audio, screen, and/or camera during unmoderated testing, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of your users' experiences, thoughts, and emotions.
Let's explore how Recordings can transform your research process and see how it works in Lyssna.
Gain a deeper understanding with Recordings
Our goal in introducing Recordings is to provide you with richer, more contextual data from your unmoderated tests when using the think-aloud protocol.
The think-aloud protocol is a research method where participants verbalize their thoughts, feelings, and decisions as they complete a task. It’s particularly valuable in user experience research and usability testing.
Here are some ways using the think-aloud protocol with Recordings can improve your research.
Reveal cognitive processes
Get a picture of your participants’ thought patterns and decision-making processes that aren’t visible through observation alone.
Identify usability issues
Participants vocalize problems or confusion they face, helping you pinpoint specific usability issues.
Capture emotional responses
Participants express frustration, satisfaction, or surprise, giving you a better understanding of the emotional impact of the user experience.
Unlock a deeper understanding of your users with Recordings
See your users' journey like never before. Enable audio, screen, and/or camera to reveal the true user experience in your next test.
Provide context for actions
Asking participants to explain their process helps you understand why they take certain actions, not just what actions they take.
Uncover misconceptions
Users verbalize assumptions or expectations that don’t align with the intended design, revealing areas for improvement.
Real-time feedback
Asking your participants to think aloud provides you with immediate feedback as they interact with a product or interface.
Requires minimal guidance
Participants can typically start thinking aloud with little instruction, making it a relatively easy method to implement. But just to be sure participants understand what’s required of them, we’ve added some helpful tips and prompts into the test-taking interface.
Build empathy and buy-in
Sharing actual user experiences, complete with audio and visual cues, can be a powerful tool for building empathy within your team and gaining stakeholder buy-in for user-centered decisions.

How Recordings works in Lyssna
Recordings can be enabled for a variety of unmoderated studies in Lyssna, including:
When setting up your test, you'll find the option to enable recordings at the top of the test section. You can choose to capture any combination of:
Think-aloud: Capture audio or both audio and video by asking the participant to speak their thoughts aloud while completing the test activity.
Screen share: Capture the participant’s interactions with the screen.
You can choose to enable Recordings on specific test sections. So if your study includes both a prototype test and a first click test, but you only want to capture audio and screen recordings for the prototype test, you have the option to do this.
Once your study is complete, you can access the recordings in the Results tab. Here, you can play back the recordings, share them with your team, or download them for further analysis.
Plus, you’ll soon be able to generate AI transcripts from the recordings, making it easier to review and analyze participant feedback.
Flexible recruitment options
One of the standout features of Recordings is its flexibility in participant recruitment. You can:
Recruit from your network: Users on paid plans can use Recordings with participants from their own networks at no additional cost.
Recruit from the Lyssna research panel: Tap into our diverse pool of over 530,000 global participants who are ready to provide feedback.
This flexibility allows you to choose the recruitment method that best fits your research needs and budget.
Pricing that makes sense
Recordings is available on all paid Lyssna plans. When recruiting from your own network, there's no additional charge for using Recordings.
If you're using the Lyssna research panel, pricing for recorded sessions is included in the recruitment fee shown on the order page.
